Evernote: digital scrapbooking

I’ve been searching for the perfect interactive bookmarking software for the longest time. I surf the net a lot and spot many interesting snippets of data and information that I love to keep for future reference. Firefox on my mac has plug-ins for all sorts of bookmarking services: DeliciousGoogle ReaderWeHeartIt and recently, Evernote.

I tend to use Delicious to bookmark interesting websites or articles that I come across but don’t have the time to read. Google Reader is a fantastic RSS feed reader that sends me constant feeds from blogs and websites that I’m interested in. I use the “Note in Reader” plug-in for Firefox to ‘note’ interesting articles that I feel are worth keeping and sharing to public. WeHeartIt is a more casual image bookmarking site that I use to capture images that inspire me in work and life. I tend to sync the content from my WeHeartIt account with my Tumblr account.

Evernote is a new software I discovered recently. It basically works like a virtual scrapbook or “notebook” as they call it. With the Evernote plug-in installed in Firefox, all I need to do is highlight text or images on websites and create a “webclip”. I can title it, tag it, make little notes on it, and Evernote even automatically includes the source so that I can go back to it for reference. I even have the option of recording data via my Mac’s iSight which is great if I didn’t have a scanner handy. I can access my notebooks offline via a desktop application on my Mac, or online on the Evernote website. If I had an iPhone or an Android, I would be able to access and edit my notebooks on there too. Evernote will automatically sync whatever changes I’ve made to all platforms so that everything is up to date.

Evernote is fantastic. I’ve used it for only an hour and already I have 11 “notes” stored under 13 tags that I can refer to when I need it. I’m working offline at the moment and typing this very blog entry on a new note, tagged “ForWordpress”. All the formatting can be done on site, so all I have to do is hop online, pop it on WordPress and hit publish.

I’ve definitely found a keeper!
