Everything is a remix

Here is a fantastic series by New York-based filmmaker Kirby Ferguson. The first of this four-part series gives us a really in-depth look at the chronology of the remix culture – particularly with popular music. It reminds me a lot of Lessig’s Remix book (free download here) that encourages remixing and derived work.

I will definitely be looking forward to the next three parts of this series.

Melbourne Pillow Fight 2010 is online

Compression issues have been solved, hurrah! So the videos are up online, finally – after hours of rendering, exporting and uploading on my crap internet.

Here is the main clip:

And here is a clip of my sister Nadira battling it out with our friend John:

Like I said before: Epic. Pillow. Battle.

I used creative commons music on both clips, Sai-k-delic Party and Glitter Bomb by Juanitos, taken off Jamendo (a great resource for CC music!). All footage have been coloured quite extensively, given the shifting light that was present at the day since the event was held at sunset. I tried to make it all look as synchronised as possible, hope I’ve done a good enough job!

Motorola MotorBlur TVC for Optus

I LOVE this ad for Motorola’s MotoBlur:

It’s great how they managed capture the essence of social media and translated to film for this TVC. When I watched this, I thought to myself “Oh yeah, that would probably be how it would be if I had my entire social network come to me.” I’m sure I wasn’t the only one. That is exactly what I think makes a great advertisement: something that the layman can relate to and make people go “Oh yeah, why didn’t I think of that.” Brilliant concept!

Information is Beautiful: infographics

Information is Beautiful is a beautiful website which presents data and information in a visual, aesthetically-pleasing form. It is a great example of alternative ways of presenting data and information – something I might want to keep in mind for my final report.

Here’s a great visual example of East vs West. From the site:

“Designer Yang Liu’s ingenious East Meets West infographic series illustrates the contrasts between German and Chinese culture visually. Everything from differences in self-perception and problem solving to the noise level in restaurants. All with the absolute minimum of text.”

Melbourne, the film

Melbourne.

I love this city. It manages to inspire me every single day. A few months ago, as a little side project for uni, I decided to film my Melbourne through my eyes.

I recorded my thought process here. An excerpt:

“There is so much about Melbourne that it is difficult to pull out a single outstanding feature. I didn’t want it to be about something typical that one might pull out of a Lonely Planet guidebook. After much thought (and throwing out completely random ideas like coffee and hands), I settled on the theme of movement. Melbourne is a city that is in constant motion. I realised that I myself don’t notice it all that much but one day I decided to stop moving and just watch. I was fascinated by how there is something moving at every single moment in time: tram doors opening and closing, the rustle of leaves in the wind, water running, cars passing, the dozens of feet crossing a junction when the light turns green.”
